Celebrating Brenda – Finalist for the Doreen Stoves Excellence in Volunteering Award

For more than three decades, Brenda has been quietly shaping community life in Manningham through her extraordinary commitment to volunteering. This year, her dedication has been recognised with a nomination for the Doreen Stoves Excellence in Volunteering Award—a fitting tribute to a woman whose contributions span generations, organisations, and countless lives.

A Life of Service in Manningham

Brenda’s volunteering journey began soon after arriving in Australia 35 years ago. What started as a way to stay connected with the local community quickly blossomed into a lifelong commitment.

For the past 11 years, Brenda has been a familiar face in Doncare’s op shops, especially at Templestowe. Week after week, she has given her time to support Doncare’s mission, finding joy in recycling, sustainability, and connecting with people from all walks of life.

Her involvement, however, extends far beyond Doncare. For more than 30 years, Brenda has been deeply engaged with Pines Learning, first as a student, then staff member and her volunteer work continues today as a board member.. Brenda hosts the popular Talking Café—a weekly initiative tackling loneliness and social isolation in older community members.

Brenda also brings warmth and companionship to aged care residents. Over the years she has visited women in care homes, often forming lasting friendships. Today she regularly visits a local woman living with dementia and vision impairment, providing conversation, comfort, and connection.

Why She Volunteers

When asked why she continues to give so much of her time, Brenda’s answer is simple: “I like keeping busy, I like the sense of fulfilment, and I like keeping in touch with people in the community. It’s very rewarding.”

She believes volunteering doesn’t have to be a huge commitment—sometimes just an hour a week can make an immeasurable difference. Whether it’s supporting someone isolated in aged care, welcoming visitors at the Talking Café, or working a shift at the op shop, Brenda’s contribution brings both practical help and human connection.

A Community Inspired

Through her diverse roles, Brenda has made lifelong friendships, mentored new volunteers, and helped build initiatives that strengthen Manningham’s social fabric. Her story demonstrates how volunteering not only benefits the community but also enriches the lives of those who give their time.

As Brenda reflects on her journey, she acknowledges the friendships, purpose, and joy volunteering has brought her. And now, with her nomination for the Doreen Stoves Volunteer Award, the community has the chance to reflect back its gratitude.

“It’s well worth considering,” Brenda says to anyone thinking of volunteering. “You don’t have to give a huge time commitment—it can just be an hour or two a week. But it’s very rewarding.”

Doncare is proud to celebrate Brenda and her inspiring contribution to our community.
