Regular visits from a volunteer visitor can help to improve your quality of life and help you feel less socially isolated
The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) is a free national program funded by the Australian Government that aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness among older people living in their own homes and in Residential Aged Care Homes.
Approximately one in five older Australians are lonely.
Research shows that loneliness increases as we get older, with people aged over 80 being more than twice as likely to experience loneliness than those in younger age groups.Loneliness not only impacts mental health but also has significant effects on physical health. The good news is, that loneliness and social isolation can be relieved with meaningful social connection.
ACVVS aims to improve the quality of life for recipients by promoting:
-
general feeling of wellbeing with maintained or increased independence
-
increased self-esteem and sense of purpose
-
a sense of connectedness to the individual’s community, culture and identity
-
a sense of connectedness to other residents in the residential aged care home and increased interactions between the group of residents visited
-
reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation; and
-
reduced feelings of depression and anxiety.
Companionship & Friendly visiting
Doncare offers a platform for friendship and companionship between Volunteer Visitors and older members of the local community who wish to engage and enjoy the presence of someone with similar interests. The assigned volunteer aims to visit at least every two weeks, ideally every week. Fun activities may include reading a book together, discussing a shared hobby or interest, taking a stroll, or watching a TV show together.
ACVVS visits are available to anyone receiving or waitlisted for Government Subsidised Residential Aged Care or Home Care Packages. Potential Recipients can be referred by family, friends, Commonwealth funded Aged Care Providers, or you can apply on your own behalf.
