How Long Does Counselling Last?

The number of counselling sessions varies. Some children may benefit from just a few sessions, while others may engage in ongoing support over a longer period. Sessions are usually held weekly.

You and your child’s counsellor will decide together what’s most appropriate, once there is a clear understanding of your child’s needs and goals.

Complete our quick self-guided support request form and our Intake Team will contact you promptly.

Consent for Counselling

  • If your child is under 16, both legal guardians must give consent before they can attend counselling.

  • If your child is 16 or older, they can choose to access counselling without parental consent or knowledge, although it is often helpful for parents to be aware and supportive.

In some cases, Doncare may refer families to other services or practitioners better suited to the young person’s specific needs.

Confidentiality

Doncare’s Counselling Program provides a confidential service, supported by professional consultation between counsellors and their experienced supervisors.

What your child shares in counselling is kept private. However, there are legal and ethical responsibilities that may require Doncare to share information in certain circumstances. These include:

  • If there is a serious risk of harm to the child or others

  • When there is a legal obligation to disclose information

  • To ensure appropriate professional oversight through clinical supervision

In such cases, Doncare reserves the right to report serious risk situations to the appropriate authorities. Wherever possible, families will be involved respectfully and transparently.
