Creating awareness is an important step in preventing elder abuse. Throughout the year, Doncare delivers community education forums and information sessions designed to increase understanding of elder abuse, promote respectful relationships and raise awareness of available support services. These events provide valuable information for older people, families, carers, community members and professionals who want to learn more about recognising and responding to elder abuse.

Coercive control involves using pressure, intimidation or controlling behaviour to influence an older person's decisions or behaviour. Over time, this can erode confidence, independence and a person's sense of control over their own life.

Around 1 in 6 older Australians living in the community experience at least one form of elder abuse each year. In Victoria, reports of elder abuse to Victoria Police increased by 18% in 2024. Elder abuse can happen to anyone. It may be deliberate or unintentional, obvious or subtle, happen once or continue over time. It can occur within families, friendships, caring relationships or any relationship where there is an expectation of trust. If something doesn't feel right, it's okay to ask for help.
