Doncare celebrates 49 years
NewsToday, Doncare reached an exciting milestone as the organisation celebrated 49 years of serving the community! The philosophy ‘for the community by the community’ has been at the core of Doncare’s operations since its inception in 1969.
We simply could not do the work we do without the generous support of the thousands of volunteers and staff who have dedicated their time over the last 49 years. We are eternally grateful to the many sponsors, donors and supporters who have provided financial assistance to ease the burden and personal pain of the clients we serve.
The 1960’s urban sprawl saw many of Manningham’s prevailing orchards subdivided into housing estates and many families relocate to the area. The rapidly increasing population had little cohesive infrastructure and the isolation of families was identified.
Local church ministers initiated a community consultation, which determined the immediate priority to form a referral and counselling service, incorporating community education and social action. To foster community connectedness, residents were encouraged to find their own ways to help each other instead of relying on professional salaried staff.
Doncare was formed in 1969 and has become an integral part of the Manningham community. Read more about Doncare's history
